A wheelie is when the front wheel of a bike or motorbike lifts off the ground and the rider balances entirely on the rear wheel while still moving forward. It happens when enough torque is applied to the rear wheel to rotate the whole bike backward around the rear axle — the same principle whether it's a bicycle, a dirt bike, or an electric wheelie bike like a Sur-Ron.
The five steps
1. Get rolling speed
You need momentum first. A wheelie doesn't launch from a dead stop — build up some forward speed.
2. Pop it with a deliberate weight shift and power
Lean back and give a firm, committed burst of power. This is the moment that actually breaks the front wheel free of the ground — a half-hearted attempt won't do it.
3. Find the balance point
Once the front is up, you're riding on the rear wheel alone. There's a specific angle — the balance point — where you're neither falling forward nor looping backward.
4. Correct with throttle and rear brake
This is the real skill. A wheelie isn't a static pose — it's a constant series of small corrections. More gas lifts it further; a light tap of the rear brake brings it back down. Real riders do this instinctively after enough practice.
5. Bring it down smoothly
Ease off and let the front wheel settle rather than dropping it hard — a hard landing can throw you off balance or damage the bike.
